Batten Down the Hatches

Just days ago, Tropical Storm Alex, the first named storm of the 2022 Atlantic Hurricane season, matured off the coast of North Carolina. North Carolina Hurricane season typically runs between June 1st and November 30th. While Tropical Storm Alex posed no significant damage, the propensity for damage caused by tropical depressions, storms, and a hurricane is great; many times resulting in not only damage but the loss of life. When living in a hurricane-prone geographic area, it is imperative to have a plan in place when a hurricane strikes. Weather.gov provides several foundations for hurricane preparation. It’s important to know the characteristics of hurricanes to plan effectively for landfall. For instance, did you know that storm surge causes the most damage of any of the hurricane hazards? Or that winds from a hurricane can reach up to 200 miles per hour! In retrospect, knowing the characteristics of a hurricane and the hazards they bring can help you better plan in the event one should occur. If you live in a hurricane-prone area, residential and commercial tenants should reevaluate their insurance policy to ensure hazards from hurricanes are covered. So flood insurance, storm damage, and fire coverage should be included. Regular upkeep of the exterior of the home is essential. Broken branches, loose yard furniture, or poor grading increase the likelihood of extensive damage to your structure. The most important part of your hurricane preparation plan should be who to call that can immediately respond in the event you experience storm damage.
